Printing from this site

***Warning: This section does not apply to older browsers, such as the one you are currently using. These will print web pages more or less exactly as they appear on screen.***

Pages on the LSHG web site have been designed for maximum readabily when printed using the "print" button on your browser. Thus, for example, the site menu will not appear on your printed page, nor will such irrelevancies as links to the top of page. We've deliberately designed the pages this way.

This means that, for short documents such as abstracts, a special "printer-friendly" page is not needed. All our pages are "printer-friendly".

If you use one of the most modern generation of browsers, you can, if you like, print LSHG web pages using a large font.

To do this, before printing a page, choose "View" from the menu, then the option "Style" (in Opera 7) or "Use Style" (in Mozilla and Mozilla-based browsers such as Netscape 6 or 7), and check "Large print". You can then use the "print" button on your browser to produce a large-font hard copy. To reverse the choice, check "Standard print".

The London Socialist Historians Group publishes downloadable documents in PDF (Portable Document Format). These are, in general, longer documents, such as papers, and one-page notices, suitable for pinning on notice boards.

PDF is essentially a means of sending printed pieces of paper electronically across the internet. This means that it can be used to make formatted documents such as the LSHG Newsletter available to a wide variety of platforms. It has the added advantage that, unlike such alternatives as Microsoft Word documents, it cannot be used as a means of transmitting viruses.

To read and print a PDF document, you need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. Most computers have this installed these days, but, if it is not installed on yours, you can download it free of charge.

Documents should begin to download immediately you click on the link.

If you have trouble downloading documents, try clicking on the link or image with the right-hand mouse button, and, when the menu appears, choose the "Save Target As..." option (if you're using Internet Explorer or Opera), the "Save Link Target As..." option (if you're using Mozilla) or the "Save Link As.." option (if you're using Netscape).

If you are using a dial-up modem and have problems with downloading large documents, you perhaps need to use a product such as GetRight, which resumes incomplete downloads when you re-connect.
