PHOENIX – Arizona Governor Doug Ducey’s budget manager is running for the Arizona House of Representatives.

Matt Gress has served as Director of the Governor’s Office for Strategic Planning and Budgeting since 2017. In this role, he oversees the preparation of the Governor’s annual budget presentation and helps implement the budget once it is enacted.

Gress previously worked as a policy advisor at the Arizona Corporation Commission and as a tax analyst on the Joint Legislative Budget Committee, which provides non-partisan analysis to state lawmakers. He is from Oklahoma and taught English in Tulsa as part of Teach For America after graduating from the University of Oklahoma.

He is running as a Republican in the new 4th Legislative District, which stretches from Central Phoenix in the north to Scottsdale and the Loop 101 freeway. It is one of the few very competitive districts among the state’s 30.

Gress calls himself a conservative Republican and was previously an elected member of the Madison Elementary School District board of trustees. He lives in Phoenix with his partner, Ducey’s former chief of staff, Daniel Scarpinato.

The Arizona Independent District Commission approved new congressional and legislative maps for the state last week. The new 4th arrondissement covers parts of several old districts.
